Muhammadiyah urges govt for UN veto on Israel

Central executives of the country's second largest Muslim organization, Muhammadiyah, on Monday called on the government to press the United Nations (UN) to use its veto rights to stop Israel from attacking the Gaza Strip.

Muhammadiyah chairman Din Syamsuddin asked the Indonesian government to initiate a UN Security Council-sanctioned resolution against Israel.

The UN's right to veto had not been used effectively, Saymsuddin said.

"This military aggression has arisen because countries with the right to veto have yet to act justly and firmly against Israel," Syamsuddin said in a statement read by Muhammadiyah deputy hairman Hayder Nashir, Tempointeraktif.com reported Monday.

If the right to veto is used decisively, the Israeli military ttacks in Gaza could be stopped, Hayder said.

Muhammadiyah also called on the UN to impose sanctions on Israel as an initiator of crimes against humanity.

Another Muhammadiyah activist, Yunahar Ilyas, said his organization had also sought to mobilize Islamic countries such as the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) in support of the Palestinian people.

"We should cut diplomatic ties and economic relations with countries that continue to support Israel," Ilyas said.

Muhammadiyah has launched various initiatives aimed at gathering monetary support for Palestine. It has also sent nine doctors to the Gaza Strip to treat injured civilians.

"Eight people left for Palestine (today), and one left yesterday," Hayder said. (emh)

It's really sad that the only reason Indonesia and Indonesians are so active in this Israel/Palestine situation is because of religion.

There are an amazing amount of civilians killed around the world by governments, and Indonesia says and does nothing.

This should not be a proud moment for Indonesia and Indonesians.
