Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said Tuesday the country's efforts to modernize its aging war machines would continue despite the limited defense budget.

"We have to modernize our military equipment or risk our defense capability and the morale of our soldiers," he said.

The House of Representatives approved a Rp 33.6 trillion defense budget for 2009, which Juwono said could not cover modernization, maintenance and improving soldiers' welfare all at once.

"We have to spend the budget carefully for optimum use," he said.

Indonesia's defense budget is dwarfed by that of more developed Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore and Malaysia. A series of accidents in the last few years involving old aircraft, warships and other war machines has highlighted the need for the modernization.
