Politicians Hamka Yandhu and Anthony Zeidra Abidin are due to
receive sentencing for major embezzlement charges at the
Corruption Court on Wednesday afternoon.
Abidin's lawyer, Maqdir Ismail, told Antara newswire that the
final trial of the two suspects, who were tried as a single case,
would take place at 1 p.m..
Yandhu and Abidin are both standing trial for violating the 2001
Corruption Law.
State prosecutors have previously demanded a four year and six
year prison terms for Yandhu and Abidin, respectively, for their
roles in the embezzlement of Bank Indonesia (BI) funds.
In 2003, BI disbursed Rp 31.5 billion (US$2.63 million) to House
Commission IX members, in three installments, to smooth the
settlement of BI liquidity support (BLBI) cases and to accelerate
the amendment of the BI law.
The payments were made through Yandhu and Abidin, who headed the
financial and banking subcommissions, respectively.
Prosecutors have also demanded the two pay fines of Rp 300
million each, as well as Rp 10.8 billion in compensation to the
state. (amr)
