A delegation of members of the Indonesian parliament led by House Speaker Agung Laksono left on Thursday for Egypt to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians suffering from Israel's military incursion into the Gaza Strip.

The delegation is expected to arrive in Cairo on Friday.

Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt A.M. Fachir said aside from delivering the aid the group would meet with Egyptian parliament speaker Fathi Sourur and would also visit Palestinian in several Cairo hospitals.

Indonesia's humanitarian aid -- sent in response to Israel's intensified military activity that has left hundreds dead and more than 1,000 injured in Gaza -- which had already arrived in Egypt, was ready for disbursement on Thursday morning through Rafah, the border city between Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

The first of the aid, consisting of medicine, would reach Gaza on Friday provided there were no complications, Health Ministry Crisis Control Center (PPK) head Rustam S Pakaya said Thursday.

At the border checkpoint into the Gaza Strip, however, a long line of trucks carrying humanitarian aid from other countries were waiting for Israel's permission to enter the area, Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) member Sarbini Abdul Muradz said. (emh).
