MANOKWARI, Papua: Some 150 tarpaulins were distributed Tuesday by World Vision to quake survivors in Masni and Sidey districts, some 120 kilometers from Manokwari.
"We're thankful for the tents. Many of us just do not dare to stay inside our houses," Wempi Wanma, one of the survivors in Mansaburi village, Masni, said.
"We were informed that many houses in Mansaburi were damaged and were no longer safe to live in. They said tarpaulins were their urgent need right now," Johny Noya, coordinator of World Vision in Manokwari, said.
Apart from the tarpaulins, World Vision also distributed drinking water and provided health services in cooperation with the local military medical team.
In Sidey, hundreds of survivors staying in makeshift tents with floors covered only with leaves, were also waiting for emergency aid.
The four-by-six square meter tarpaulins were the first aid received after an earthquake rocked the region on Sunday.
The districts are among the nearest regions to the earthquake's epicenter. -- JP
