JAKARTA: The government said Tuesday that it would not cut the Rp 207.4 trillion (US$19 billion) education budget, despite the reduction of the state budget resulting from the global financial crisis.

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said that with total state expenditures scaled down to Rp 989.7 trillion, from the previously Rp 1,037 trillion, the untouched education budget would now account for more than 20 percent of the nation's total spending.

"About 21 percent of our budget is allocated for education. We could have cut the education budget by Rp 9 trillion, but we decided not to make any changes to it," Sri Mulyani told a press conference after a plenary cabinet meeting at the presidential palace.

The government will also allocate Rp 10.2 trillion for "fiscal stimulus" programs focused on infrastructure development and poverty eradication programs. - JP
