President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono decided Monday to lower fuel and electricity prices before Indonesians go to the polls this year. Yudhoyono also issued a policy to immediately force public transportation operators to slash fares and allow the public to directly enjoy the benefits from a string of fuel price cuts.

But the price of world crude oil hit rock bottom last month. Had he really intended to sustain the people's purchasing power, he would have lowered the prices then, not so close to the poll.

It must be done because currently the crude oil price is low. It would be silly if the subs dized gas price closed in on the unsubsidized prices on other fuel grades.
