Local police have arrested 26-year-old Yosef, aka Cecep, in Surabaya, East Java, for allegedly shooting and slashing the throat of his 55-year-old mother Kho Li San on Tuesday.

Adj. Comr. Yimmy Kurniawan, head of South Surabaya Police's detectives, said they suspect Yosep was suffering from a mental illness.

“We are calling a psychiatrist to examine the suspect,” he said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

The police came to the family's house on Jln. Pecindilan VI, after receiving calls from neighbors.

The neighbors said that they were suspicious when they saw Yosef walking up and down in front of the house aimlessly, carrying an air rifle, while Kho Li San was not sitting in her wheelchair on the porch, where she was every other morning.

“We later broke into the house and found her lying on the floor of her room, covered in blood,” Sanusi, one of the neighbors, said.

When the police came, Yosep hid himself in the bathroom, still carrying the rifle. It took about an hour for the police to get him out.

The police said the victim took several shots in her stomach and suffered from a deep cut on her throat. (dre)
