YOGYAKARTA: A group of thieves broke into an automatic teller machine at Bank Permata on Jl. Kolombo, Samirono, Sleman, taking away about Rp 25 million (US$2,155).

Sleman Police Chief Adj. Snr. Comr. Suharsono said that six thieves were suspected to be involved in the crime which was first discovered by the bank officers.

“The bank officers checked the ATM at about 8 p.m. but they found the box inside the ATM was missing,” Suharsono said.

He said based on its preliminary examination on the machine, the thieves forcibly opened the ATM.

Suharsono disclosed that a witness, Yaduri, a night guard near the bank, saw six men in black dress in a van stop at the ATM at about 3 a.m. “But the witness thought that the men were bank officers,” he said. — JP
