Drunk officer shoots two, kills one

An apparently drunken police officer shot two residents, killing one of them, at a wedding party in Merauke, Papua, shortly after midnight on Friday, Antara news agency reported.

Witnesses said the incident happened during a heated argument that began earlier in the night. The officer, identified only as Chief Brig. DU, drew his gun and shot two men, Dono, 27, and Safarudin, 28.

Safarudin was shot in the head, Dono in the ankle. Both were later taken to Merauke Hospital, where Safarudin's was pronounced dead at 08:40 a.m.

Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Agus Riyanto said he was yet to receive a full report on the shooting.

DU has been detained at the Merauke police headquarters for questioning. (dre)
