A reforestation initiative supported by WWF Indonesia, the West Nusa Tenggara provincial administration, the East Lombok regency, local communities and various corporations, has been launched at Mt. Rinjani in East Lombok.

The NEWtrees reforestation program, launched on Jan. 21, is helping replenish water resources and forest cover in Lombok.

A recorded 40,000 hectares of protected forests around Mt. Rinjani have been destroyed, resulting in severe water shortages for the surrounding community of almost 3 million people. Over the past 10 years in Lombok, 43 percent of springs around Rinjani have dried up and do not produce water anymore. The program launch also featured a green “I-Ring” fundraiser with a ring-back tone titled, Jika bumi bisa bicara (If the earth could speak), donated by singers and composers Katon Bagaskara and Nugie. The two brothers performed this song, and some of their hits, live during the NEWtrees ceremony.

“This is a small thing we can do to help rehabilitate this planet. Imagine if 300 million people in Indonesia used the song for their cell phones - it could be a big, big donation for the Indonesian environment,” Nugie said. “I am so enthusiastic about this because ring-back tones are really popular now, and I think if the media is there to help us, it’s going to be huge.”

The NEWtrees reforestation program was initially established in Sebangau National Park in central Kalimantan in November 2007.
