The Anti-Corruption Commission said Thursday they would not appeal the Corruption Court's sentencing of former lawmaker and convicted bribe-taker Sarjan Taher, who was sentenced to 4.5 years in jail Wednesday.
"There's no reason to appeal the decision since the charges were all proven by the court," the commission's director for prosecutions Ferry Wibisono said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
He added the court's decision was not far from the state prosecutor's initial request.
"The sentence is good enough, we had asked for a 5-year jail term and the court granted 4.5. So we support the decision," Wibisono added.
Sarjan Taher, a member of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democratic Party, was found guilty of accepting Rp 360 million (US$31,858) in bribes from the South Sumatra administration to smooth the House of Representatives' approval of the conversion of a 600-hectare protected mangrove forest in Pantai Air Telang, Banyuasin regency, into the Tanjung Api-api seaport.
Taher's sentence was brought down by six months because the panel of judges deemed the crime a collective one. (amr)
