SURABAYA: Two recent cuts totalling Rp 1000 (8 US cents) in the prices of Premium gasoline and diesel have led the East Java administration to lower bus fares accordingly.
Hary Soegiri, head of the provincial transportation office, said here over the weekend that the fares could be cut only slightly, because of the fuel price cuts in December 2008 and January 2009.
"The government is considering making a long list of bus fares in line with the fluctuation of world crude oil prices, so that we will no longer need to hold meetings to fix the transportation fares. It will be more efficient and effective if all transportation subsectors, including trains and airlines, set their lowest and highest fares," he told The Jakarta Post.
Hary added that with the reductions on the prices of Premium and diesel this month, bus fares would be cut by 2.8 percent, and with fuel price cut last month, fares would be cut by another 2.3 percent. -JP
