JAKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said Thursday that they would not appeal the Corruption Court’s descision to sentence former lawmaker and convicted bribe-taker Sarjan Taher to 4.5 years ail on Wednesday.

“There’s no reason to appeal the decision since the charges were all proven by the court,” the commission’s director for prosecutions Ferry Wibisono said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

He added that the court’s decision was close to the state prosecutor’s initial request.

“The sentence is good enough, we had asked for a 5-year jail term and the court granted 4.5. So we support the decision,” Wibisono added.

Sarjan Taher, a member of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party, was found guilty of accepting Rp 360 million (US$31,858) in bribes from the South Sumatra administration to smooth House of Representatives’ approval for the conversion of a 600-hectare stretch of a protected mangrove forest in Pantai Air Telang, Banyuasin regency, for the Tanjung Api-api seaport.

Taher’s sentence was reduced by six months because the panel of judges deemed the crime a collective action.  —JP
