Jakarta Police have uncovered a money forgery operation involving a gang of 15 suspects, it announced Sunday.

The suspects were rounded up at separate locations across Greater Jakarta over the last three weeks.

Head of the city police fiscal, monetary and reserves division, Adj. Sr. Comr. Bahagia Dachi, said the suspects had been counterfeiting US dollar and Brazilian bank notes.

“We have completed the dossiers and will soon submit them to the prosecutors’ office,” Dachi told The Jakarta Post.

Besides selling the counterfeit money, Dachi said, the suspects also went to banks to try and change the money.

When bank officers told them the money was counterfeit, they pretended to have been deceived, asking the banks for refunds. — JP
