Jakarta on alert as water level rises in Katulampa

Officials at the Katulampa sluice gate in Bogor, West Java, have officially put Jakarta on alert as water levels continue to rise at the dam, which is vital barrier to flooding in Jakarta.

"Water height has reached 80 centimeters. We are now on alert," said Agus, an operator at the sluice gate, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com on Tuesday morning.

Agus said the water has risen 20 centimeters overnight following heavy rain in Puncak, Bogor, further upstream on the Ciliwung river.

It generally takes between 10 and 11 hours for water from Katulampa to reach the Manggarai sluice gates, the main barometer for flooding in Jakarta.

Meanwhile, water levels in Manggarai receded overnight from 845 centimeters to 790 centimeters. Several areas along Ciliwung river in Central Jakarta have also reported that water has started to recede. (dre)
