I refer to an article titled "Muhammadiyah ready to help Rohingyas," (www.thejakartapost.com, Feb. 1)

I am a Rohingya living in the United States. Muhammadiyah's stance is absolutely right and objective. It is a moral and humanitarian responsibility of regional and international bodies to defend the oppressed.

Deportation and repatriation will not solve the long-standing problems the Rohingyas face at home.

They are victims of institutionalized persecution and systematic discrimination by the Burmese military regime.

They are not economic immigrants but political refugees as they are escaping oppression and brutality on the part of the Burmese military regime.

So the issue needs to be addressed by working on the root cause of the influx rather than pushing these people back into their abysmal confinement.

I therefore totally agree with the proposal to seek a permanent solution to the Rohingyas' problem in Arakan, the western part of Burma.
