Japan's Defense Ministry has invited Indonesia to attend informal regional security talks it is set to host for the first time next month, the Antara news agency reported on Monday.

"This is going to be an informal meeting and the first of its kinds since Japan established its defense ministry," Col. Neno Mamriono, Indonesian defense attaché to Japan, told Antara from the embassy in Tokyo.

Japan's Defense Ministry was officially established on Jan. 9, 2007. The Japanese Defense Agency managed the country’s security and defense issues for 53 years prior to that.

Neno Mamriono said Indonesia would send Secretary-General of the Indonesian Defense Ministry Lt. Gen. Safrie Sjamsoeddin, to the security talks.

The informal talks will discuss regional security issues, including concerns of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) such as rampant piracy along the Malaka Straits, which borders a number of ASEAN countries.

Japan has interests in the security of Malaka Straits because 60 percent of its energy supplies are transported through the area.
