Son sent to mental hospital after killing mother

Yosef Setiono, who is suspected to have shot and slashed the throat of his 55-year-old mother Kho Li San last month, was sent to Jiwa Menur Mental Hospital in Surabaya by East Java police on Wednesday.

First Insp. Sigit Hariawan, a South Surabaya Police detective, said that the police have yet to determine Yosef's mental health and whether they could hold him responsible for the crime.

“We have yet to receive final report [on his mental health], we are yet to declare his mental condition,” he said as quoted by Antara.

Sigit said that based on an initial report of an examination from Wijaya Kusuma University, Yosef was having a hallucination which led him to killing his own mother.

Police arrested 26-year-old Yosef, aka Cecep, in his house few hours after his neighbors found his mother dead with gunshot and cut injuries at the house. Yosef had been seen earlier walking about in front of the house carrying a rifle. He refused to be arrested and hid in the bathroom when police came. (dre)
