Home Minister Mardiyanto swore in Soekarwo and Saifullah Yusuf as governor and vice governor of East Java, respectively, at East Java's Provincial Legislature in Surabaya on Thursday morning.
The pair, who won the first-ever direct elections in the province, took the gubernatorial post by garnering 50.20 percent, or 7,729,944 votes.
East Java is the most populous province so far to hold direct elections in Indonesia.
They were nominated by an alliance of the National Mandate (PAN) and Democratic parties. Soekarwo and his partner polled only slightly ahead of the rival pair Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Mudjiono backed by the United Development Party (PPP), the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), and the National Awakening Party (PKB).
The Constitutional Court had annulled Soekarwo's victory in December last year citing voting irregularities following Khofifah's lawsuit.
Repeat elections were held in Bangkalan and Sampang regencies and ballots were recounted in Pamekasan regency in January. The court later rejected a second appeal Khofifah filed in February. (dre)
