JAKARTA: East Jakarta municipality officials culled 102 fowl in Bambu Apus, Cipayung, on Thursday.

The birds were confiscated during raids on Thursday and were slaughtered right away.

The fowl, mostly from backyard farming, included 77 chickens, a goose, six ducks and 18 pigeons.

"I don't mind having my chickens slaughtered. I knew it was forbidden to keep them anyway," Asori, a resident, was quoted as saying by beritajakarta.com.

Adnan Ahmad, head of the East Jakarta Maritime, Agriculture and Food Resilience Agency, said his office had culled 8,853 fowl in 2008, most of them chickens.

This year, the agency has culled about 300 fowl. Most of those, 115, were pigeons, Adnan said. -JP
