Vice President Jusuf Kalla spoke briefly with his United States counterpart Joe Biden in the first top level meeting between the two nations since President Barack Obama took office two weeks ago. Late Thursday, the Associated Press reported Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would visit Japan, South Korea, China and Indonesia.

And what did the previous administration do to the "Muslim world"? An invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan is not the "Muslim world". They were not invaded because they were Muslim. Were there any actions that singled out Muslims and their beliefs?
What did the Bush administration ever do against Indonesia? Ties were very good. Bush lifted trade sanctions and visited on the way to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. On top of that, they did all the "heavy lifting" for the tsunami aid effort.
By Jusuf Kalla's logic it could be said the United States was a great friend of the "Muslim world". So what is Jusuf Kalla's problem? It sounds like he is sticking his nose into business that isn't his.

Kalla said Indonesia hailed the changes Obama had initiated but was curious to see if they would have an impact on relations between the West and the Muslim world, relations which soured during the administration of former President George W. Bush.
I am disappointed with Kalla's comments. It was the terrorists who started killing Americans, then Indonesians (in Bali and at the Marriot hotel), and Bush was preventing more casualties in his own country. Bush was the one who came to visit Indonesia twice to show support for SBY and Kalla.
Why then did Kalla comment in such a way to make it sound like Indonesia is against Bush?
Kalla should instead be thanking Bush for his support in helping eradicate terrorists in Indonesia because, had it not been for Bush, Al-Qaeda's cells here could have succeeded in bombing more buildings in Jakarta. Kalla did not treat Bush fairly.
He is pinning too much hope on Obama, who will clearly care more about saving his own presidency. If the Vice President thinks our exports will be given special treatment by Obama, he should prepare to be disappointed.

*Global trends 2025: A transformed world' -- Feb. 6, p. 6
This is the title of a special report prepared by the National Intelligence Council (NIC) of the United States last November. As the very title indicates, our world is undergoing some very radical changes.
"The international system - as constructed following World War II - will be almost unrecognizable by 2025 owing to the rise of emerging powers, a globalizing economy, an historic transfer of relative wealth and economic power from West to East, and the growing influence of non-state actors," the report says.

I am an Indonesian. I am always proud of myself as an Indonesian when I say that statement, especially in front of foreigners. Indonesia is the greatest country in the world, no doubt about it.
But, the greatest country without the brightest and the best human resources will mean nothing. Wake up, and make a difference.
Citizen's representatives at Senayan should not be clowns; we are not choosing you guys to be jokers. Start thinking, how can I contribute to our beloved Indonesia and care for Indonesian people from Sabang in Aceh to Merauke in Papua.

Hey, Indonesian brothers! We Indians, like you, are rising in the world order.
We are there with you as friends, brothers and allies. But watch out for one thing; try to contain this fundamentalism.
We too have not been very successful in containing this "specter of communal thinking", but we need to. We wish you all the best.
