Spanish officials say five illegal migrants including an 8-year-old girl drowned off the Canary Islands' coast when their boat capsized close to shore. Six others have been rescued and an estimated 15 are missing.
Marine rescue chief Anibal Carrillo says the boat capsized Sunday evening just off the island of Lanzarote.
Two youths dived into the water and with the help of others in small boats managed to save six. Carrillo said the search for the missing continued Monday.
The migrants are thought to be from Morocco.
Thousands of people seeking a better life in Europe attempt treacherous journeys from Africa to the Canary Islands or the Spanish mainland in overcrowded boats. Most are caught and hundreds die along the way.
