The National Police have charged five suspects with murder for their alleged roles in a violent riot that led to the death of North Sumatra legislative council speaker Abdul Aziz Angkat early this month.
National Police spokesperson Abubakar Nataprawira told tempointeraktif.com on Monday that the police had charged them under Articles 338 and 340 of the Criminal Code on murder and conspiracy to murder.
"Out of a total 67 suspects, five of them may face a 15-year prison sentences or the death penalty should it be proven that they violated the articles," he said, without mentioning the names of the suspects.
He said that the police had also been charged 62 other suspects under articles of 146, 160, 170, 335 and 351 of the Criminal Code.
"We will divide the case into 41 files and are now processing the case," he said.
Abdul died of heart attack hours after a group of protesters demonstrated outside the council building, demanding it form a new administrative province in Tapanuli. (ewd)
