BANDUNG, W. Java: A special operation has been launched by the West Java provincial police in a bid to curb increasing incidences of street crime that have been estimated to have risen by three percent in January.
West Java Police Chief Insp. Gen. Timur Pradopo said Monday that January recorded a total of 2,236 crimes, or 68 more than the previous month.
"Street crime is categorized as traditional and is still concerning as many of the perpetrators use deadly weapons including pistols," Timur told reporters.
The crimes range from extortion by thugs to theft of jewelry and electronics such as hand phones and laptops as well as violence, blackmailing, gambling, destruction and human trafficking.
Timur said the police had detained at least 693 suspects from 387 street cases since January 19, 2009. "We are still after 74 other perpetrators," he added. - JP
