Fires scorch 50 hectares of Aceh oil palm plantation, threaten more

Around 50 hectares of an oil palm plantation have been razed and 450 more at high risk of being destroyed by a fire that has ravaged peatlands in Arongan district in West Aceh regency since Monday.
Regency administration spokesman Armei Kandi told Antara the fire was expanding and had destroyed around 50 hectares out of a total of 500 hectares of oil palm plantation, which had been provided by the Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency for 500 families of survivors of the 2004 tsunami.
Armei said the administration had deployed firefighters, but to no avail. The authorities have yet to determine to cause of the fire.
Another fire that has raged in Djohan Pahlawan district has forced hundreds of families to flee the area. (dre)
