The Australian government has allocated Rp 441 billion (US$40 million) for four packages of road construction in Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara, through the Eastern Indonesian National Road Improvement Program (EINRIP), a local official said Sunday.

“The funds, which reach hundreds of billions of rupiah, will be used to construct four sections of road with a total length of 71 kilometers,” said B. Gawan Soesetyo, an official with Sumbawa administration.

He added the EINRIP program was a form of support from the Australian government for infrastructure development in eastern Indonesia.

The Australian aid is a soft loan with a grace period of 10 years.

“Based on the schedule, the contracts for work on the four road sections should be concluded by the middle of 2009,” Gawan was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
