Victims of Situbondo flood receive new houses

The East Java administration has provided almost Rp 9 billion (US$750,000) in new houses to 174 families in Situdondo regency, after floods swept their homes away earlier this month, according to
tempointeraktif.com.
Situbondo Deputy Regent Suroso symbolically handed over a house key to one of the victims on Tuesday in the regency’s new housing complex. Suroso said that the administration had taken funds from the province’s regional budget in 2008 to pay for the houses.
“We'll allocate more money in the 2009 budget to provide new houses with electricity and clean water,” he said.
Resident Imam Bahri said that he had yet to move in to the new home as there was no electricity or water supply.
“We expect that the administration will provide us those basic needs soon,” he said.
On Feb. 8, heavy flood submerged houses in Sumberkolak and Seliwung villages, forcing some residents to live on the banks of the Sampean River. (ewd)
