BANDUNG, West Java: A motorcycle gang which sparked fear among Bandung residents in 2007 through its violence and vandalism, is apparently back in action.
The dozens of youngsters who make up the gang set fire to a car on Jl. Cisangkuy in the wee hours Thursday morning, after police had dispersed them when they had tried to stage illegal road races.
Ade Rusmanda, 56, a witness, said he saw a group of motorcyclists roaring off in pursuit of a white Carry van. When they caught up with it, the young men hit the vehicle's glass windows with stones, wooden chairs and branches.
They chased the three passengers, who hid in a nearby park. "After the youngsters failed to capture the three passengers, they set fire to the car," Ade said.
There was an explosion from the car, followed by flames that rose in the air 10 meters, he said. The young men left the scene after circling the park several times in search of the ill-fated passengers.
None of the nearby residents came out of their houses.
Chief of Central Bandung Police Adj. Snr. Comr. I Wayan Supartha confirmed the incident, but said he had no idea whether those involved in the incident were members of the motorcycle gang. - JP*
