The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has arrested National Mandate Party (PAN) lawmaker Abdul Hadi Jamal and a Transportation Ministry official, Darmawati, for alleged bribery.

The suspects had been caught red-handed exchanging US$80,000 and Rp 54 million (around $5,000) on Jl. Jenderal Sudirman in the Karet area of Jakarta, at around 10:00 p.m. on Monday, KPK deputy chairman Mochamad Jasin said on Tuesday.

Separately, the anti-graft body also arrested businessman Hontjo Kurniawan who is a commissioner of PT Kurnia Jaya Wira Bakti, in Surabaya.

Jasin said the money handed over by Darmawati - a member of the administrative staff of the Sea Transportation Directorate General of the Transportation Ministry - had come from Hontjo.

During preliminary investigations, Abdul Hadi admitted to have received Rp 1 billion from Hontjo last Friday, Jasin said.

"The money was allegedly paid so that the businessman would be appointed in a ministerial project," he said.

Abdul Hadi is a member of the House of Representatives' Commission V overseeing transportation. (dre)
