Lost scholarship adds clue in Singapore student death

An Indonesian student who stabbed his professor and later fell to his death at a Singapore university on Monday had his scholarship revoked just two weeks ago, The Strait Times reports.

A spokesman of the Nanyang Technological University confirmed that David Hartanto Widjaja's ASEAN Scholarship had been terminated last month.

On Monday, the 21-year-old had knifed his supervisor, Associate Professor Chan Kap Luk, 45, in the back during a discussion in his office, and then slit his own wrists before fleeing and falling four floors to his death.

Despite having had frequent conversations with his mother in the past fortnight, David had kept his parents in the dark about his situation.

According to David's mother, David had never said anything to her about having problems with his scholarship, Indonesian Embassy first secretary Yayan G. H. Mulyana said.

Most of his friends also did not know. Many who were interviewed yesterday said they had thought he was doing well with his studies.

"I didn't know he had lost the scholarship. We never expected him to do something like this," said one, a fourth-year mechanical and production engineering student who refused to be named.

On Monday, David was given a teary farewell at a local crematorium. In attendance were his parents and elder brother who flew in from Jakarta on Monday evening. (dre)
