14 missing after Thousand Islands boat collision

Police and Navy officers are searching for 14 people who went missing in waters in the northern part of the Thousand Islands regency, Jakarta, after a tugboat collided with a cargo ship early on Thursday morning.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Zulkarnain told Antara news agency that 12 other people had been rescued in the incident.

Zulkarnain explained that the Rimba III cargo ship was carrying cement from Tanjung Priok seaport bound for Kalimantan when it collided with Harapan Indah VII tugboat travelling from Lampung to Marunda in North Jakarta, near Damar Island at around 3:00 a.m.

Jakarta Police has sent seven patrol boats to the area to help search for the missing people, he said. (dre)
