The popularity of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono among residents
of Yogyakarta has surpassed that of the king
of the local sultanate, Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, a recent survey revealed.
The survey was carried out by Cakrawala Nusantara Consultancy research
institute, between Feb. 17 and 21, and had a total of 1,065 respondents.
In terms of popularity, 42.72 percent of respondents favored Yudhoyono as the
figure "best suited to lead the country", whereas Hamengkuwono only garnered
18.4 percent.
When it came to presidential election pairs, however, 26.2 percent of respondents
preferred the Hamengkubuwono-Hidayat Nur Wahid pair against the SBY-Jusuf Kalla
pair, who gained 20.32 percent. The third favorite pairing was the Megawati-Sultan
option, who received 17.67 percent of votes.
"Many residents believe the Sultan can make things better [for Indonesia] if
he is elected as president," Cakrawala president director Budi Santosa said as
quoted by tempointeraktif.com on Thursday. (ewd)
