Thirteen convicted separatists from the South Maluku
Republic (RMS) group were moved to the high security prison on Nusakambangan Island
in Cilacap, Central Java, early on Wednesday,
Antara reports.
Local police and the anti-terror Special Detachment 88 officers guarded the
transfer operation from Kedungpane Penitentiary in Semarang,
Central Java. The entourage left the mainland from
Wijayapura pier at around 4:30 a.m..
Previously, Central Java Penitentiary Division head Bambang Winahyo said the group
were among 19 RMS-related convicts who had been sent from Ambon Penitentiary in
Maluku, to Central Java.
Some of the group members had been involved in an attempt to wave RMS flags in
front of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during his visit to Maluku in June
2007.
The rest were RMS activists, most of whom had been arrested and convicted for
their involvement in similar cases in 2004 and 2005. (dre)
