Thirteen convicted separatists from the South Maluku Republic (RMS) group were moved to the high security prison on Nusakambangan Island in Cilacap, Central Java, early on Wednesday, Antara reports.

Local police and the anti-terror Special Detachment 88 officers guarded the transfer operation from Kedungpane Penitentiary in Semarang, Central Java. The entourage left the mainland from Wijayapura pier at around 4:30 a.m..

Previously, Central Java Penitentiary Division head Bambang Winahyo said the group were among 19 RMS-related convicts who had been sent from Ambon Penitentiary in Maluku, to Central Java.

Some of the group members had been involved in an attempt to wave RMS flags in front of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during his visit to Maluku in June 2007.

The rest were RMS activists, most of whom had been arrested and convicted for their involvement in similar cases in 2004 and 2005. (dre)
