Former Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid, also known as Gus Dur, has thrown his political support fbehind former army general Prabowo Subianto and his party, the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra).
Gus Dur, who is the most respected figure of the Nahdatul Ulema – the country’s biggest Muslim group, told his follower to vote for Gerindra and Prabowo in the upcoming general election.
He said those who voted for the National Movement Party (PKB), a party that he used to led, could not throw their support behind Gerindra. Gus Dur and his loyal supporters were ousted from the PKB after an internal dispute with his nephew, Muhaimin Iskandar, who later become the party’s chairman.
“Our party has been stolen by the help of the government,” Gus Dur said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
“And now, let me introduce Prabowo to PKB supporters. I hope PKB supporters can now vote for Gerindra and Prabowo,” he said. (and)
