Papua Police chief Gen. Bagus Eko Danto said separatist rebels had turned to violence as part of their efforts to sabotage the general elections in Puncak Jaya regency, state news Antara reported.
Bagus said Sunday his office had received information about rebel efforts to undermine the election by attacking policemen and residents.
“They damaged public infrastructure and facilities, and raped many women,” he said.
He added that rebel leader Goliath Tabuni had made plans to target specific areas and incite riots.
“We'll add more personnel to prevent such accidents from happening, and search for the rebels,” he said. (ewd)
