JAKARTA: Court settlements remain unable to stop or reduce the cases of domestic violence in households, a women's organization said Saturday.

Settling domestic violence cases in courts did not immediately mean the end of violence in households, the Rifka Annisa organization for women said.

"It is not really effective in changing men's attitudes and behavior," the organization's research and training manager Nur Hasyim told a seminar as reported by tempointeraktif.com news portal on Saturday.

From 2004-2007, there were 25,788 cases of domestic violence, 1,693 cases of violence against children, 2,548 cases of violence between dating couples and 467 cases of violence against domestic workers, according data from the organization.

"Around 90 percent of domestic violence victims who initially chose to go to court ultimately opted for reconciliation," Hasyim said. -JP
