Russian tourist dies in diving accident

KUPANG: Syiromi Nakauz Mikael, 45, a Russian tourist, died whilst diving with seven other people over the weekend at the Gili Banta marine park in West Manggarai regency, East Nusa Tenggara.
West Manggarai Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Syamsurid said on Monday that the police were still investigating the cause of death. The seven other tourists diving with him were being questioned for further information.
Tarata Grand Komodo diving master Bastian Waru, told reporters that Mikael arrived with his seven friends at the weekend.
"Mr. Mikael was one of our guests. They had planned to explore the marine park for one week," he said.
Bastian said Mikael was diving at a depth of 25-meters on Sunday afternoon with three friends and a diving master.
"Several minutes *after diving*, one of his friends returned to the ship and said that he *Mikael* could not breath. We took some emergency steps but he died," he added. - JP
