Fires destroyed hundreds of houses in the Maccini Gusung
area, Makassar, early on Friday, killing an
elderly man and leaving hundreds of others without homes.
The fire, which broke out at around 4:30 a.m., destroyed 230 houses, and affecting
some 1,150 residents.
The only fatality from the incident was 80-year-old Daeng Tarra. His remains were
found in the bathroom of his home. Another victim, Daeng Tanni, 50, suffered severe
burns and was treated at Pelamonia
Army Hospital.
The fire allegedly started at a house in the area, and two residents had been detained
for questioning, West Makassar police chief
Adj. Sr. Comr Triwibowo said.
The fire may have caused damages worth billions of rupiah, because it spread so
quickly and left residents no time to move their belongings, Triwibowo said.
