Outcasts may be recalled for Sudirman Cup

T

otal failure to secure silverware from the last two Super Series events have prompted the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) to mull calling back former national team members for the Sudirman Cup.

"We are still considering the possibility over using athletes from outside the national training camp," Lius Pongoh, PBSI official in charge of development affairs, said Friday.

He added the PBSI had not decided whom and how many non-training camp athletes would be invited, adding that naming the team members before the April 10 entry deadline would be premature.

The badminton outcasts had mixed responses to the idea.

While men's world No. 7 Taufik Hidayat, who quit the camp in early February, and mixed doubles specialist Flandy Limpele hinted they welcomed the invitation, women's and mixed doubles player Vita Marissa declined such an invitation.

When asked whether he was ready to strengthen the Indonesian team preparing for the Sudirman Cup in Guangzhou, China, from May 10 to 17, Taufik said, "It depends when they *PBSI* make the call.

"If, say, the championship is next week, and they invite me today, it would be difficult *to accept*," Taufik, who has been playing at his own expense since his retirement, told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

Flandy said, "I have to see first who's included in the Sudirman Cup team. If all the other team members are juniors, why should I waste my energy joining a losing team?"

Flandy is currently preparing for a comeback with partner Vita to defend their Asia Championship, whose 2009 edition will take place in Suwon, South Korea, from April 7 to 12.

While Lius had yet to mention the names for a possible call-up, Vita, who quit the national training camp last month over fee issues, said, "They should be ashamed if they want to use me again.

"They'd better not call me back," the 28-year-old added.

Indonesian players returned home empty-handed from their European tour, where they took part in the All England and the Swiss Open.

At the latter event, the team fared even worse than at the prestigious All England, with not a single player managing to reach the semifinals.

The PBSI imposed a punishment policy by not sending the players to the Asian Championship, leaving only men's doubles pair Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan to fly the flag in South Korea.

The world No. 1 pairing were absent from the European tour due to Kido's injury.
