MAKASSAR: People living with disabilities in South Sulawesi have demanded access to polling stations in the upcoming elections.

They said the access had eluded them in the 2004 polls.

The chairman of the Forum for the Advocacy and Human Rights of People Living with Disabilities, Muhammad Sonny Sandra, said that a number of such voters had previously encountered difficulties in exercising their right to vote, since the nearest polling stations were on the second floor of a building, or had poor accessibility.

Visually impaired voters also say Braille templates had only been made available in the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) election.

"We expect all the polling booths in the upcoming elections to be accessible for people living with disabilities so it will be easier for us to exercise our right to vote," Sonny said. - JP
