JAYAPURA, Papua: The Immigration Office in Jayapura will deport two of three Dutch journalists covering the visit of former Free Papua Movement (OPM) activist Nicholas Jouwe, now a Dutch citizen, for alleged visa violations.

Gabriel Babette and Peter Smith, both 57, were alleged to have violated Article 50 of Law No. 9/1992 on immigration while covering the visit of the OPM co-founder on March 24 in Jayapura.

"Both arrived in Indonesia on visas-on-arrival just to cover Jouwe's activities, but they conducted other coverage," said Hendriantono, acting head of the Jayapura Immigration Office.

He added the three journalists arrived in Jayapura on March 22 as part of Jouwe's entourage. However, when Jouwe left for Jakarta on March 24, the three stayed on and were caught red-handed covering protests at Imbi Park.

"They have left for Jakarta. Babette and Smith were given three days to leave Indonesia," Hendriantono said, adding the third journalist, identified as Ronald Wigman, 54, would have to go to Denpasar for further investigation as his documents were reportedly in Denpasar. - JP
