All lights at five public landmarks in Jakarta will be turned off for
an hour starting at 8.30 p.m. On Saturday as the city administration
takes part in the WWF climate change campaign called Earth Hour.
The landmarks are the National Monument (Monas), the Hotel Indonesia
Roundabout, the City Hall, the Pemuda statue and the Arjuna Wiwaha
Horse statue.
“For the first time Jakarta will join 2,848 other cities in 83
countries in the global event,” said WWF Indonesia spokesperson Fitrian
Ardiansyah as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo, who recently was appointed Earth Hour
ambassador, would lead the event by symbolically switching off the
lights at the landmarks, Fitrian said.
Fitrian also said that several companies had uttered their willingness to participate in the event.
During the one hour of darkness, musicians would play acoustic
instruments at the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, Fitrian said. (and)
