The United Development Party (PPP) held a campaign rally at the Bung Karno Indoor Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Sunday.

Party chairman Suryadharma Ali urged supporters to maintain unity and watch out for moves that could hurt the implementation of Islamic teaching in the country.

“It is the duty of every Muslim to promote Islam as the way of life in this democratic nation,” Suryadharma, who is also minister of cooperatives and small and medium enterprises, told more than 10,000 supporters on Sunday.

He also said the party demanded a full ban against the activities of the Ahmadiyah sect, which he said was a threat to Islam.

The PPP also promised to run a free education program.
