Two consecutive earthquakes jolted Palu in
Central Sulawesi early on Friday morning, causing a panic among local
residents, Antara news agency reports. No damage or injuries were reported.
The earthquakes measured 4.4 and 4.9 on the Richter scale, Palu geophysics
office chief Robert Owen Wahyu says.
Both temblors came from the same epicenter at a depth of 16 kilometers below
sea level, and about 18 km northeast of Palu. The first earthquake hit at 2:51
a.m. local time.
Recently, on March 2 and March 29, a magnitude 5.7 and magnitude 4 quake
were recorded, respectively, hitting Palu from a depth of 10 kilometers under the
seabed, Wahyu. (dre)
