CIREBON: Indonesia is facing a crisis with large numbers of ulema having "changed profession", particularly in the lead up to the elections, Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni claims.
Recently many clerics have become legislators and party executives or have landed support roles for certain candidates contesting the national and local polls.
The minister made the statement during his visit to the Buntet Islamic boarding school in Cirebon, West Java, on Saturday
Maftuh said to Antara news agency that Buntet students should revive the greatness of their late leader Abdullah Abbas, who opposed political involvement for ulema. - JP

I agree with Endo.
Who needs ulema in the first place?
The way I see it, I can't think of any country that mixes religion and politics "successfully", without adopting Draconian measures to keep their people both ignorant and powerless.
Maybe the ulema would be better off adopting modern technology such as social networking to spread their message.
Why don't they have a Facebook website, for example?

Seriously, do we need ulema? I think we will have a better life without them.
