The Regional General Election Commission in Bali has rejected a call from the supervisory elections
committee (Panwaslu) to conduct a vote rerun of the April 9 polls across the
province.
"I can hereby confirm that the Bali KPUD will not hold a legislative polls
rerun," the commission chief, Ketut Sukawati Lanang Perbawa, said to
Antara in Denpasar on Tuesday.
Perbawa said although many irregularities were discovered during last week's
polls they were not enough to force an election rerun province-wide.
The proposal for a vote rerun came from the Denpasar, Tabanan, Badung,
Karangasem, Buleleng, Jembrana, and Gianyar districts.
Money politics was alleged to have occurred at provincial poll stations, Perbawa
said, among other election violations. The proposal from the commission,
however, was not in accordance with existing election procedures.
The election law stipulates that an election rerun can only be recommended by
the Polling Station Working Committees (KPPS), not the Panwaslu. Perbawa added that election reruns were also quite costly.
