Senior officials from Indonesia
and Australia met in Bali on Tuesday to discuss issues related to people
smuggling, human trafficking and other transnational crimes, Antara news agency
has reported.
The senior officials' meeting (SOM) at Nusa Dua took place just before the kickoff
of the Bali Regional Ministerial Meeting Conference (BRMC) III.
The Indonesian delegation was led by the Director General for Multilateral
Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Reslan Jeni, and included officials
from the directorate for international security and disarmament affairs.
The Indonesian officials met with their counterparts from the Australian
Foreign Ministry and immigration office.
"This meeting is closed to the media. We are not able to provide complete
information about the meeting's agenda," Sam E. Marentak, spokesman for
the foreign ministry, said on the sidelines of the meeting.
He said that Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda and his Australian
counterpart Stephen Smith had arrived in Bali to
hold bilateral talks.
Wirajuda and Smith are also scheduled to meet with Timor Leste's Foreign
Minister Zacharias Albano around the same time in Nusa Dua.
Since its inception in 2002, the BRMC, commonly known as the Bali Process, has
served as an important regional opportunity to discuss measures for the prevention
and handling of human trafficking. (dre)
