BANDUNG: A Golkar Party legislative candidate died during vote counting at the Regol district polls committee office on Jl. Denki in Bandung on Tuesday.
The sudden death of 42-year-old Daris Kurniawan shocked fellow party member Chaidir Yahya, whom he had accompanied for the last three days during the ballot counting. The polls committee is expected to complete the counting on Tuesday.
"Today is the last day *of vote counting*, therefore he said he would stay until the end of the process," Chaidir said.
The two worked for Edwin Sanjaya, who is contesting a seat at the Bandung legislature.
Chaidir added that Daris had never complained about health problems or looked sick.
Central Bandung Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. I Wayan Supartha said the police ruled out any possibility that Daris had died of an act of violence.
"We are still examining what caused his death. He might have died of exhaustion, heart attack or other causes," Supartha said.
Daris' body was admitted to Sartika Asih Hospital for autopsy. - JP
