MEDAN: The North Sumatra legislative council elected Darmataksiah JWR, a councilor from the Golkar Party, as the new council speaker Wednesday, replacing Abdul Azis Angkat, who died following a riot in February.
Darmataksiah, the first woman to ever hold the position, won by 33 votes in a head-to-head battle against fellow Golkar councilor Hamas Muda Siregar.
Fifty-eight out of the total 84 members of the council voted for the candidates.
"I will do my best," she said after the result, to tempointeraktif.com.
The election was held to fill the empty council speaker seat left by Abdul, who died from a heart attack just hours after a group of protesters demonstrated outside the council building, demanding it form a new administrative province in Tapanuli. -JP
